Status of Applications

21 August 2006.  With the ending of the Summer 2006 program on Friday 4 August 2006, we have completed our current 3-year grant from NSF.  Last week, we submitted a renewal request for another 3 year grant.  We will update the web site with respect to a summer 2007 program once we receive notification of the status of the renewal submission.  Until we hear about a successful submission, we will not be accepting applications for a Summer 2007 program.

Wednesday, 19 April 2006 (12:25pm).  We have now filled all 10 undergraduate positions for the REU program and the one teacher position for our RET program.  As you can see from the table below, we had to go far deeper into our waiting list than in previous years.  Thanks to everyone who applied and my apologies to all those outstanding candidates that we were never able to maker offers to.  I will remain optimistic that the 160+ students that we never were able to make an offer to were able to find suitable summer research positions, my optimism is fueled by the feedback from the 20 students who turned down our offers, with the exception of one or two, all reported finding a summer research position through a Chemistry REU program elsewhere, a REU program in a field besides chemistry, a research position in an industrial lab, or a non-REU research position at their home institution.

Offers Accepted 10 (10 positions available)
Offers Outstanding 0
Offers Declined 20

(In 2005, we made 17 offers to fill 10 positions)

Tuesday, 11 April 2006 (11:30pm).  As you can see in the table above, we are having a bit more difficulty in filling our positions than in previous years  This is a "happy" situation in that the students who have declined our offers have accepted other research positions (other REU programs, in other disciplines, in industry)  We are still looking for 4 students (feel free to contact me by email for additional details about the remaining positions).

Friday, 31 March 2006 (1:30pm).  As you can see in the table above, we have already had five declinations and we still have six positions to fill.  It is highly likely we will need to make a few more offers -- but they must wait until the current offers are either declined or time out (there is a week limit on making a decision).

Monday, 27 March 2006 (11:10 am).  Since the initial ten offers went out on Friday, three people turned down those offers and so an additional three offers were made, one on 3/25 and two this morning.

Friday, 24 March 2006 (4:55 pm).  We've made the first round of offers about 5 minutes ago.  Because of the nature of the grant and the program, we can only have outstanding a number of offers equal to the number of positions.  This means that even though we have never reached a "100% yield", we have to wait till we receive a formal "no" before we can make another offer.  Last year we had to make about 16 offers (I need to go back and look at the exact statistics) to fill 10 spots.  We anticipate make several more offers but I can't be sure exactly when.  Check the email address you gave us and keep an eye on this page.

Monday, 13 March 2006.  We just complete compiling all the information, and are working our way through the reading of the applications.  First offers are expected to go out Friday or Saturday of this week.

As of today, Tuesday, 28 February 2006, applications are pouring in (the fax machine may be unreachable at times as it is heavily being used by writers of recommendation letters!).  We are busy collating them and organizing all the data.  But we have not started the actual review process yet.  We expect to receive well over 100 applications, and possibly over two hundred.  Thus we are unable to respond to email queries about "has all my application material been received".  I'm sorry, but we just don't have the resources to be able to do that.  Rest assured that if you get the stuff in our hands by the due date, then we have it.  Also, if something key is missing and you look to be a "contender", we will contact you, so be prepared to respond immediately.

As of today, Monday, 20 February 2006, the web site for the Summer 2006 program is pretty much done.  The one exception is that not all projects have yet been posted, although many are already displayed.  Applications are being received but the review process has not yet started.  If you are going to apply, be sure all materials are in our hands before March 1, 2006.

As of today, Thursday, 9 February 2006, the web site is still being created for the Summer 2006 program.  Until such time as it is complete, please feel free to examine the web pages for our 2005 program as the 2006 program will be nearly identical.  Applications are being received but the review process has not yet started.
