Announcement of and application process for

Chemistry NSF-REU Leadership Group Travel Awards

Background:

The NSF-REU Leadership Group announces that up to fifty travel reimbursements will be awarded to REU students who will attend and present their research at the spring national American Chemical Society meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, March 26–30, 2006.  Each award will be $250.00, and no more than three awards will be made to students from a single REU site.  The awards will be made in the order in which Professor David Haines receives the applications, so students are encouraged to apply immediately after submitting their abstracts to the ACS.  Students may submit their abstracts to the Division of Chemical Education Undergraduate Research Poster sessions, or to any other session of the meeting, but the travel award will be contingent on the acceptance of the abstract for presentation at the ACS meeting.

Eligibility:

All current undergraduate students whose summer research stipends were funded by NSF-REU grants are eligible to apply.  Students who were funded by NSF-REU during the summer of 2005, but who will have graduated at the time of the meeting, are also eligible.  Awardees MUST be listed as PRESENTERS of the research in the ACS abstract in order to be eligible for this award.  Preference will be given to students who have not received a NSF-REU Leadership Group travel award in the past.

Application Process:

There are three components to the application process:

Announcement of the Chemistry REU Travel Awards:

The names of those who have been awarded the travel stipends will be announced via email by December 1, 2005, and they will be posted on the NSF-REU Chemistry web site, http://chemreu.chem.indiana.edu/. Late applications will be funded if funds are available.  On the NSF-REU Chemistry web site, a logo for NSF-REU supported presentations is given, and students must display this logo prominently on their posters at the conference.

The checks will be distributed by Prof. David Haines during the REU/LS-AMP Travel Awards Reception and Dinner at the Atlanta meeting.  Awardees are expected to attend this reception.  Awardees will be notified of the details of this reception before the ACS meeting.  The reimbursement checks will be given upon the signing of an acknowledgment form at the reception.
