As of Wednesday, 14 April 2004, we have completed filling the 12 student positions for our REU program and have a superb candidate for the Teacher position. Everyone should have received emails by now explicitly notifying them of the decisions. If any questions remain, please don't hesitate to email me.
As of today, Friday, 26 March 2004, we have reviewed all 160+ applications from undergraduates for the Summer 2004 program. Happily, we expect to fill 12 positions rather than the initially estimated 10 positions. 9 students have accepted offers to join us, 5 students have turned down our offers and 3 offers are outstanding yet. A handful of students have been invited to be placed on a Wait List. Unfortunately if we have not made you and offer for a position in the program or on the Wait List, we will not be able to do so, despite the fact that there are many more deserving applicants than positions. We hope to send out a formal letter to all applicants later today.
Applicants often wonder why they were unable to secure a position. Its not necessarily easy to answer and usually involves weighted consideration of many facts. We strive for a diversity of participants in every way imaginable, including types of Chemical interests, future plans, prior research experience, size of school currently attending, demonstrated ability to be a team player, and demographics. Even so, many of our final choices are somewhat arbitrary. Not getting into our program often simply reflects the fact that more qualified candidates are available than positions.
Our RET positions (one or two teachers or teacher/student teams) remain unfilled.
I will try to keep this page up-to-date but I know it will not always be so. Contact me if you need additional info (joeg@pitt.edu).
