GK-12 Project: Newsletter Editor

In cooperation with Prof. Jen Cartier (School of Education), I am directing a GK-12 project that supports a number of Graduate Students (and several undergraduates) as Fellows, working with Partner Teachers in a number of schools in the Pittsburgh Public School District. We are in need of a Newsletter Editor to be responsible for designing, writing, editing, copyiing and distributing a newsletter, with 3-4 issues in the fall and 4 issues in the spring. The position pays $2,500 per term with a two-term minimum contract required. 3D Projection: 5 Hours/Week Chemical Education Innovation Position Available

In the Fall of 2001 the Chemistry department initiated a project to provide the hardware to allow 3D projection to be used to augment chemical instruction. We now have two systems in play, a permanently installed system in CSC12B and a portable system that can wheeled into any classroom. We are in need of one or two undergraduates per term, who are interested in technology, teaching, and/or chemical education to help: (1) implement the system in any lecture for any faculty member (includes preparing materials, assisting the faculty member in the design of the lecture, and running the system for the faculty member during the lecture); (2) Updating the hardware and software (e.g., installing CAChe on the projection computers to replace/augment DesignView; installing GeoWall and other 3D projection software; tweaking the hardware to make it ever simpler and more robust; etc.) and (3) Creating and maintaining a web site of popular materials to be used to augment standard chemsitry lecture classes.


PittLearn: 5-10 Hours/Week Position Available

We are building a new teaching tool. Titled "PittLearn" this web-delivered self-help/self-assesment tool will be used by students in large enrollment chemistry courses (e.g., GenChem and Orgo) to ascertain their current level of achievement. We are currently seeking students interested in Chemistry and the field of science education to help with (a) building the database of questions on which PittLearn is based; (b) helping with the programming of php-based and Java-servlets or html-based web pages; and (c) designing and conducting the evaluation of this new tool. Contact Prof. Grabowski for additional details. Will become a part of a team that in Summer of 2006 is composed of Prof. Grabowsk, one upper class Chemistry major and one entering Pitt freshman.

In cooperation with Prof. Jen Cartier (School of Education), I am directing a GK-12 project that supports a number of Graduate Students (and several undergraduates) as Fellows, working with Partner Teachers in a number of schools in the Pittsburgh Public School District. We are in need of a Web Master to update and maintain a web site to share information and to allow all participating Fellows and teachers to share information, communicate with the students and parents, and to electronically submit necessary documents and reports.
