The Chemistry Department X-ray Diffraction Facility is equipped with a Bruker Smart Apex CCD single-crystal diffractometer with sealed-tube Molybdenum radiation. Data can be collected at nitrogen-cooled temperatures as low as 90K. Over 1500 new structures of organic, organometallic and inorganic compounds have been determined in our Lab. Most of our work involves Departmental samples but we have engaged in several outside collaborations involving other universities and industrial companies. We also have a Bruker Nanostar system with a Cu rotating anode for small angle diffraction studies on Nano-materials and other large structures. The diffractometers are controlled by personal computers. Our computers also host software programs for solving, refining, and viewing crystal structures and also provide access to the Cambridge Structural Database.
